Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Project applications close 15 May 2019.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

RHS Chatsworth Garden Show comes to 3/4H

3/4A is participating in an Australian first - an international environmental education program with Pilsley Church of England Primary school in Derbyshire, England. The program is call 'Eco Schools Twinning Program', where schools are matched globally with a sister school to share student experiences of environmental learning and action to promote awareness, sustainability and change.

Below is a recount from Bethany, Hannah and Charlotte who recently enjoyed their school visit to the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show. The girls wanted to share this with 3/4A and our community here in Oxley Park.

"I really enjoyed all of the show, however my favourite part was the Great Conservatory which was filled to the brim with every colour of orchid. There was a myriad of other gob-smacking things!" - Bethany

"My favourite part was when I saw a giant hat with flowers underneath which went up and down. We also made some wooden necklaces with our names on one side and a picture on the other". - Hannah

"The upcycled planters were my favourite part because they were all different and unique. Ours was based on George's marvellous medicine. It contains lots of herbs". - Charlotte

Bold as Brass - Oxley Park Public School Brass Band

Oxley Park Public School has initiated a partnership with the Australian Children's Music Foundation. The ACMF is supporting our school in the creation of a brass ensemble. We are currently sourcing quality brass instruments for our band along with music stands.

Mr John Sheedy from the Parramatta Brass Band has donated a Euphonium, also known as a 'marching trumpet' for our school band. He was very keen for a student to learn how to play the Euphonium as his children had done before him. Mr Sheedy will be providing additional contacts to our school to assist in the establishment of our brass band which will be a Gifted and Talented program at our school as we have already identified several students learning to play a musical instrument.

Our school thanks Mr Sheedy and the Australian Children's Music Foundation for their support.

3/4H spent Wednesday with limited sight as they continued to explore how some parlaympians manage with a vision impairment after hearing that Melissa Perrine won a BRONZE medal skiing down a very steep slope with less than 5% of her eye sight. The students found the activity very challenging as they could not see anything not in their direct eye line. They are developing a lot of empathy for those with different abilities to themselves.

Paralympians Inspire 3/4H

It was quite a challenge but they were committed to exploring the difficulties faced with a missing limb. Donations needed for Easter Egg-Themed Hats - Buddy Program!

All classes from preschool to year 6 are paired together in our Buddy Program. The purpose of the program is to enable older students to mentor and support younger 'buddies' across a range of school events and regular teaching and learning opportunities in class.

On Tuesday the 20th of March (Week 8) our buddy classes will be coming together to make Easter Egg-Themed hats. As such we are need of donations to create our hats. If you could purchase inexpensive craft items that could be used to adorn simple Easter Egg-themed hats we would be very appreciative. Please forward donated items to your classroom teacher.

At the end of 2017, ChillArt and ArTSI students brainstormed ideas for a front of school mural.

Over the course of 2017, these ideas have been brought to artistic life.

Extra symbols such as the Dharug totem, the turtle, were added following extra research by this year's ChillArt and ArTSI students. Below: mural in the early stages.

2017 Year 6 Farewell "Best Ever"

Best Ever!

These words were on the lips of every parent and staff member who attended our Year 6 Graduation Ceremony and Farewell Dinner.

Our Year 6 students were positively beaming from ear to ear wearing our new graduation garments and mortarboards (the black square caps they wear with the tassel). Proud parents took many pictures for family, friends and of course Facebook.

The Year 6 Graduation Committee were simply amazing in their dedication and attention to every detail, before, during and after the ceremony. Special thanks to all the parents and carers who helped with the graduation ceremony and farewell dinner. Special thanks to our staff who spent hours and hours, making by hand the graduation garments in our school colours for all future Year 6 students to enjoy. These include Mrs Madsen, Mrs Jurisic, Mrs Dugdale and Mrs Konarew, well done ladies!

Our stage 3 staff worked tirelessly as well behind the scenes preparing speeches, teaching dance routines and supporting students with their speeches. Teachers also spent hours rehearsing the graduation and farewell ceremonies. Special thanks to Mrs Oxley who spearheaded this initiative.

It has set a very high benchmark of excellence for all other Year 6 students to participate in and enjoy as we farewell them into the future and a testament to a highly successful and valued partnership between home and school.

Rube GoldBERG Machine by Caitlin B - 5/6L

Caitlin B of 5/6L has wowed Mrs Smith and Mr Peters with her Rube Goldberg machine.

Caitlin says that she used household items and parts of the family game called 'Mouse Trap'. Her idea was to get a small white ball to roll down ramps made mostly of straws to land in the Mouse Trap game bucket. Caitlin did research on the Internet and saw that others had used household items.

When she tested her Rube Goldberg device she discovered that it worked the very first time, much to the delight of her dad and herself. Caitlin would love to see more hands-on projects for Years 5 and 6 next year.

The Oxley Park Community is invited to attend the official launch and opening of the park on the corner of Brisbane and Australia street that our own Oxley Park students designed. The launch will begin at 3pm-5pm and there will be a free community BBQ, music, fun activities for families, and cutting of ribbon to open the playground.

Rube Goldman Machine Magic - Kyan of 5/6L

Kyan of 5/6L visited Mrs Smith and Mr Peters today to share his journey in creating a 'Rube Goldman' machine. A Rube Goldman machine is a contraption where a ball or other object is put in motion to roll down ramps, funnels and tubes to trigger a chain event that culminates in a desired action.

In the case of Kyan's machine, the purpose was to send a plastic bowling ball down a ramp to knock over some bowling pins. He experimented with various materials, filled ping pong balls with sand to weight them appropriately to the task and conducted several trials to improve the design of his Rube Goldman machine.

What a year we have had at Oxley Park Public School!

All classrooms have an Ultimate Champion system which visually tracks positive behaviour throughout a day with opportunities for students to monitor their own behaviour being a respectful, safe learner. This system also provides all students the opportunity to take time out if need be to regroup and refocus as a positive approach rather than negative.

Diamond Bee was introduced to the school after much consultation with students in our SRC on his overall design and name. A perfect name for our mascot and the student love and refer to him regularly.

The signage which has been 18 months in the making has been placed around the school with a lot of positive feedback from staff, students and the school community.

Our Referral System has been refined and we now have a Behaviour Referral Slip replacing Orange and Red Slips. The referral provides an opportunity for the students and their teacher to discuss concerns prior to meeting with an executive member if necessary.

Our Caught Being Good Cards have Diamond Bee on them and have been issued consistently throughout the year with students receiving pencils/pens and wristbands as a reward.

Our new colourful Superstar cards have been well received and staff are evaluating the benefits to sending them home rather than keep them in class until the quota for each Bronze, Silver, Gold level has been reached. Out of the 505 K-6 students, the end of the year saw 498 students achieve Bronze level, 390 achieve Silver level and 219 students achieve the Gold Superstar level. What a fantastic level of recognition of our respectful, safe learners within our school.

Student voice has been a big part of this year with our 63 SRC members invited to make decisions and suggestions from the mascot design and name to deciding on end of year rewards. They have also participated in various fundraising activities for the school and wider community.

The PBL survey issued to students, staff and parents/carers this term has been collated and the overall results show that we are moving towards a more transparent system where we listen to all stakeholders in order to improve and strengthen. The 2018 PBL team will be addressing opportunities for growth presented by staff, students and parents and carers to ensure we have a consistent and fair system for all. We appreciate the time and feedback on all returned surveys.

Many visitors to Oxley Park PS comment on the beautiful entrance and pathway. Colleagues from Clairgate PS specifically commented on how calm the school is and how impressed they were watching students walk to lines at the end of the break. They commented on how welcoming the staff and students were on their arrival and when invited into rooms to observe the fabulous teaching and learning we are doing here.

What an awesome place to teach and learn. We are looking forward to building on projects established this year and to continuing putting the needs of our students and families at the core of everything we do at Oxley Park Public School.

Schools Reconciliation Challenge 2017

This year, 2 of our ArTSI students (L'Keyah and Kassidy), had artworks entered in this competition. There were 220 artworks and 60 stories from students across NSW entered, each reflecting on the theme "Where's Your Country" and on the broader story of reconciliation.

Of these entries, 9 finalist artworks were selected from Primary Schools across NSW.

We are very pleased to announce that L'Keyah's work, The Lands That Made Me, was selected for exhibition and was awarded second place in the Primary School category.

Her artwork was also featured in the exhibition catalogue as part of the foreword by Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Sarah Mitchell.

The exhibition was launched at the Powerhouse Museum (MAAS) in Sydney and will tour NSW over the next 6 months.

Stop the Presses! Sno Cone Fundraiser Success - no brain freezes recorded!

Our SRC held a fundraiser yesterday raising around $600 from the sale of Sno Cones out of our breakfast club.

One of our intrepid students reported "These are the best Sno Cones ever because they don't give you a 'brain freeze'. Certainly not indeed! Great news that is. The queue for the Sno Cones stretched from the breakfast club all the way past the canteen - such lovely manners and patient waiting from our students...

This is where the magic happens (below) special thanks to Mrs Chaplin and Mrs Smithers for the amazing management of Sno Cone central. It was a fantastic initiative, thank you SRC and staff who helped out.

New PBL Signage!

Wow! Check out our new PBL signage at Oxley Park Public School! Diamond Bee is in a buzz about our new signs! Mrs Hawkins has been working for 18 months to get these signs into our school. The signage supports students to understand our school rules and what is expected of them across our school.

At the front of the school is our welcoming sign as well, representing some of the many languages that we have represented in our school community. The feedback from the students has been fantastic, the signs have generated a lot of interest

School Captain Rhianni acknowledged by Gabi Hollows and NSW Minister for Education, Rob Stokes MP

Rhianni was nominated by her teachers as someone who uphold's Fred Hollows' values - honesty, kindness and integrity for the Fred Hollows Humanity award held each year.

'Rhianni regularly displays integrity, compassion and honesty through her positive attitude. She maintains her Captain's role and supports and covers duties for her fellow prefects when needed. Rhianni has offered her lunch to others without, relinquished her place on the radio roster for another, lent her hat so another student could play on the oval and is always the first to help an injured student. She continued to support her dance group attending the performance as a ticket holder when she was injured. Rhianni compliments others and is humble and highly respected by all. She thoroughly deserves this recognition.'

I'd like to start by saying thank you to Mrs Hawkins and all the Stage 3 teachers for nominating me for the Fred Hollows Humanity award. It's nice knowing how special I am to a lot of people. On Monday, I travelled with my parents to Parliament House in Sydney where I received my certificate from Gabi Hollows who is Fred Hollows' wife and Rob Stokes who is the Minister of Education. It made me feel very proud of the girl I'm becoming and it's an experience I'll never forget. Seeing all the other students and hearing stories about how kind and caring other Year 6 students are around NSW, it makes me know how bright our future really is. Thanks again everyone!!!

Moooove Over! Kindergarten are at the Farm!

Golden Ridge Farm was the destination for our Kindergarten students who thoroughly enjoyed this hands on learning experience about all things that moo, quack, baa or oink!

Students enjoyed having hands on opportunities to learn about farm animals they have studied in class and the many demonstrations that were conducted during the day. The staff at the farm were full of praise for our Kindergarten students.

Chickens and Eggs Ahoy at Oxley Park Public School

Chickens! Our school has recently acquired 7 laying hens to compliment our environmental and sustainability education. Students have been very excited to see chickens in their new hutch. Our chickens have already produced half a dozen eggs since arriving late last week.

Some of our chickens have already been named, including one black chicken who has been dubbed 'Batman'. The eggs will be used to compliment our market garden and cooking programs for students. All of our teachers are welcome to come down and view at close quarters our chickens which are very tame.

Our school would like to thank Crestwood High School for their kind donation of our superhero themed chickens. I am sure they will be laying even more eggs in a... "Flash".

Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 15 March 2018.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2019, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student's email address).

Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from 10 October 2017 in a printed application information booklet and at https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity- classes/year-7 .

Help Stage 2 Reduce our Product Wastage

Help S2 reduce our product wastage

Stage Two are looking at sustainability and recycling as part of their Geography and English units this term. They would like your old hair care, skin care and cosmetics packaging from now until Dec 8.

Please rinse out any residual product from used/old containers and/or packages and send into school for collection near the office. These used containers and packages will be melted down and made into recycled products by Terracycle.

The school earns points for every item over 22g and these points add up on a leaderboard and the school/group with the most points at the end of the competition wins playground equipment made from recycled plastic. Please support our efforts in reducing product.

Every year schools across New South Wales are invited to participate in Operation Art, an initiative of The Children's Hospital at Westmead in association with the New South Wales Department of Education. The Operation Art program provides a forum for schools and students to demonstrate their visual arts achievements through exhibitions at the Armory Gallery, Sydney Olympic Park and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

This year, under the direction of Artist-in-Residence Mrs Dugdale three students from Oxley Park Public School were selected for ArtBank with one student picking up a Paw Pick nomination.

Congratulations to our students for their achievement in the Visual Arts and to Mrs Dugdale for her passion and commitment to the Arts at our school.

Stewart House Visit

Today Rhianni, Lauren, Abdullah and Resha took the books selected and purchased by our SRC to Mrs Annett at Stewart House, North Curl Curl...the beach. Highlights: touring the facilities and playing games with some of the students staying there, the kindness of the other students, the amazing equipment, presenting Mrs Annett with an Appreciation Certificate and delivering the books for the students to take home with them on Friday. However it seems the biggest highlights though were playing in the water at the beach, milkshakes while their legs dried off and the fun car ride back to school with Mrs Hawkins. What terrific ambassadors these Yr 6 students are for Oxley Park PS.

2nd Place in Threatened Species Art Competition!!!

National Threatened Species Day was commemorated across the country on 7 September to raise awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction.

Three talented students along with their proud families attended the Threatened Species Children's Art competition launch and prizegiving ceremony at Parliament House on this day.

The competition saw 1600 children from across NSW and the ACT submit artworks to highlight the plight of our native species at risk.

ChillArt students Resha, Eve and Zoe were delighted when it was announced that they had been awarded 2nd place for their beautiful group work entry, Fragile Beauty.

ChillArt-ists are Finalists! Threatened Species Competition

Congratulations to our stage 3 ChillArt group: Resha, Eve and Zoe, whose entries into the Threatened Species Art Competition.

The students had to create artworks using a variety of mediums to depict threatened species in Australia. The competition is a state-wide initiative which attracted hundreds if not thousands of entries.

Our school is very proud of the ChillArt students and wish to acknowledge the tireless efforts of Mrs Dugdale for her leadership of this competition.

Mrs Dugdale and the students will be attending Parliament House on Thursday where the winners will be announced. Our school is very proud to be associated with this initiative and to make it to the finals is an outstanding outcome for all involved, well done.

Radical Radishes!

It's not every day that the office staff are interrupted by radishes but here we are! Students from 5/6Z have been working with other stage 3 classes in their STEM garden to grow a variety of market garden vegetables. The radishes look fabulous! Bon appetite!

Kudos to the radical radish reapers who wowed the office with the first sample of produce from the stage 3 STEM garden. Keep it coming!

Congratulations Kassidy!

Kassidy, a senior student at Oxley Park Public School, recently won a gold medal and in doing so became a state champion. Kassidy's gruelling training regime has finally paid off and her family and our school couldn't be prouder of her. She beat the best gymnasts from around NSW in her age division to place first in the highly competitive field of gymnastics vaulting. We are tremendously proud of her achievement and wish her every success in striving for even greater honours at national level. We also congratulate Kassidy's proud parents and family for all their dedication in helping Kassidy reach for the gymnastic stars. Well done Kassidy!

The explorers and discoverers in the preschool have been looking at faces...

In the art area some mirrors where placed and children had the opportunity to create their own self portrait. Some children took the experience quiet seriously. They would go to the mirror look at their face – paint what they saw and then would return to the mirror look and then add to their self-portrait.

The children paid attention to detail including eye brows, eyelashes even earrings. From this experience children have shown how they can create representational drawings. They can engage in meaningful conversations and also start to have an appreciation of the work they have created. Just look at our wall of faces.

Digital Badges from Finland at Oxley Park

Our school is trialing the use of digital badges following feedback on our Student Leadership Policy. Years 5 and 6 will be earning digital badges in Terms 2 and 3. The digital badges have been created in consultation with students and staff. They will not affect the current merit system of bronze, silver and gold with our superstars, nor our school rules of respectful, safe, learner. The badges themselves have been created to capture what we value as a school community and programs currently underway in our school.

The idea of digital badges is to empower students in their learning and personal growth. Each badge has its own published criteria so students know exactly what they have to do to earn the badge. This will allow students to produce evidence of what they can do, what they know and how they are being model student leaders. The badges will allow our school to differentiate our student leadership policy so that we can determine, through the number of badges earned, the most appropriate leadership opportunity for students as determined by the students themselves.

Parents are encouraged to ask their children which badges they are working towards and ask them how they are progressing. Students will be encouraged to earn 2 badges per fortnight and will be supported in class. Each student will have a login to Open Badge Factory where they will be able to see their badges and show parents and friends. Year 6 will also be earning badges as part of our trial.

At the end of the year our school will assess our digital badge trial from Finland to determine the effectiveness of digital badges. Our partner in Finland is Open Badge Factory who have informed us that we are the only primary school in Australia currently using digital badges.

Racism? No Way!

This Is My Story

I was born on the 5^th of March 2006, at Nepean Public Hospital. My name is Tea and the spelling of it is French. My background is Anglo-Australian. I live with my mum, dad, big sister, brother and little sister.

I am white but I don't discriminate against anybody because they are a different colour to me. I believe that everybody is the same on the inside and that you should not judge anybody because of their culture or religion. If you do, that is called being racist, and I am against racism. What about you?

I go to Oxley Park Public School and my teacher is Miss Marquez. My favourite colour is pink! What's yours? I like to eat, talk and write. What are your interests?

I have lots of pets at my house but they are not all mine. My big sister has a blue tongue lizard. My brother and little sister have fish and we all have a rabbit. Do you have any pets? If yes, what are they?

So now you know about me. When you answer my questions I will know about you and you will see how we are different. But you will also see how we are similar. We are similar because we both have a favourite colour, we both have hobbies and we both HATE racism.

So now you should look at everybody and see them the same as you, but unique in their own ways. Being racist is horrible. If you want to be racist think about what you are going to say. Will it hurt the person or will they laugh? Remember to treat people the way you want to be treated. If you want to judge people be prepared to be judged yourself.

So I need you to do a favour for me. Can you go around and tell everybody you know that racism is not good? Then tell them to pass it on. And one more favour, please always REJECT RACISM.

Learning Ahoy!

Last week on Wednesday 5/6C and 5/6Z were in contact with other schools and 2 Librarians using the Connected Classrooms technology in our school library. We discussed the history of the Industrial Revolution and we answered some questions.

The two women showed us tickets a family used to board a ship and another ticket an individual used to board a different ship. They showed us drawings of a landscape and one of an upper-class woman. The women showed us the journal of the captain of the ship and the ink stain on the journal, when the ship was hit by a big wave.

The Connected Classroom was very enjoyable and educational which was good because most kids don't enjoy learning in non-fun ways. Connected Classroom was very fun and we wish we could do it again thank you for reading our review on Connected Classroom.

Guess Who's Turning 60?

We are! You're invited to our 60th Anniversary Fete at Oxley Park Public School!

Oxley Park Public School was opened in 1957 on the then sleepy outskirts of Sydney's western suburbs shrouded by tea tree scrub. Much has changed with the passing of time but not the quality of education and partnership with the local community of Oxley Park.

From humble beginnings where the first canteen was conducted under the shade of a tree, to apron parades at the Easter Parade our school now boasts over 500 students with heritage spanning the globe; more than 40 languages are spoken by our students in the home. Our school motto is as timely today as it was in 1957 - "Learning Together for the Future", as students learn and collaborate with their peers using digital learning technologies.

This Saturday (the 25th of March) our school will be holding a fete to celebrate this milestone. This fete has been organised by our dedicated P&C Association, community members and with support of staff. We wish to thank all of our volunteers and staff who have worked tirelessly to bring our anniversary to fruition.

Please come and join us for a fun-filled day of rides, stalls, food and entertainment and take a walk down memory lane in our school hall where 60 years of Oxley Park Public School memorabilia will be on display sharing our learning journey. All funds raised will support the construction of a new covered over learning area (COLA) in our school grounds.

Students Ride to Road Safety

Students in years 3 and 4 recently attended a bicycle workshop titled C.A.R.E.S to raise their awareness of how to be safe when out and about on a bicycle. Students enjoyed learning about safety equipment necessary for safe riding and the road rules as they apply to bicycle riders.

The best part of the day was pushing pedals around the training park to put their new learning into practice! It was a fantastic day out and all the students thoroughly enjoyed the learning on the day in a safe and structured environment. Special thanks to Mrs Rositano for all her efforts organising this excursion.

Our current app is still operational and will remain so until the beginning of Term 4. From Week One, in Term 4, we will solely use the Skoolbag app.

All students at OPPS have access to Mathletics which is a highly engaging website to help your child practise their mathematics skills. Access to this site is at no cost to you. All students have been issued with usernames and passwords to be able to access the site at home. If your child did not bring this home, please speak with your child's teacher or call the school and speak with Miss Bennett who can supply you with that information.

Each fortnight in our newsletter, we will have a Mathletes section to celebrate the success of our top 10 students who have competed against other students from around the world in the live mathletics section.

OPPS goes 'xo'

By now you may have heard the buzz coming from the students about the xo laptops. Wow....what an adventure we are on. The xo laptops have been purchased by the school to allow each and every child at OPPS from Kindergarten right through to Year Six to have their own xo laptop as a learning tool. Pre-School will also have access to a set of xo laptops for the children to use. We are proud to announce that we are now a school where we have one laptop per child. From Pre-School all the way through to Year 6, our students each have a laptop at their finger tips as another valuable learning to tool to add to their existing toolkit. At OPPS we strive to educate our students in preparation for the future by ensuring that our students are equipped with the skills necessary to achieve success in the 21st Century world. The xo laptops are yet another way to connect our students to the world.

Mathletics

Oxley Park Public School has purchased Mathletics for students to use at school and at home. All students have been issued with a username and passwords, that will allow them to access the site. Students are able to learn maths concepts while having fun. Studnets maybe given homework using Mathletics, if you house does not have internet access please let your child's teacher know. Also If your child has forgotten or lost either their username or password please see their classroom teacher.

Harmony Day Celebration 2012

Students at Oxley Park celebrated Harmony Day on Wednesday 21st March. Students were asked to dress in national dress or come to school wearing orange. Students from Oxley Park performed for the school. Congratulations to Josphin from stage 2, the Oxley Park Drummers and the choir for their performance. A special thanks goes to the students Jayde, Jack, Chanel, Christian and Kate from Halloran School of Dance, you did a fantastic job and we appreciate it.

Paint the Town REaD

Paint the Town REaD is a program to support, encourage and promote reading. This program has been running at Oxley Park Public School since it began in 2008.

Robynne from Mission Australia is here on Thursday mornings from 8:30 until 9am in area 1. Students, parents, siblings and friends are invited to come pick up a book and start the love of reading.

Goal Setting Interviews

Parents are invited to make an appointment with their child's teacher for setting students learning goals for 2012.

Interviews will be held beginning Monday 12 March 2012. Parents will receive an interview request form shortly. Simply select a convient time, return it to your child's teacher and then together select the goals for your child.

PSP Survey Barbeque

Parents and children will be able to eat a free breakfast and in return we ask that you complete a vital survey that may gain funds to support activities, programs and events within OUR/YOUR school.

Royce Simmons Rugby League Team 2011

Oxley Park are the St.Marys District Champions in the Royce Simmons 7-a-side Rugby League Knockout for the fourth Year in a row.

The winning team in 2011 included – Jai, Liam, Levi, Philip, Jarrod, Riley, Bilya, Mohamed and Christian.

We had 2 teams compete this year and all the boys that attended the day represented Oxley Park with pride. I am extremely proud of the boys efforts. Well done boys!

Athletics Carnival Monday 25th July, 2011 is ON

The athletics carnival at Blair oval is on today. Students need to bring sufficient food, drink and sports shoes. Buses will leave the school at 9am and students will return before 3pm.

New Flag donated by Mr Bradbury

NEW FLAG FOR OXLEY PARK PUBLIC SCHOOL

David Bradbury, Federal Member of Parliament, presented Oxley Park Public School with a new Australian Flag. This replaced the old, faded flag.

Mr Bradbury explained to the students, the parts of the flag and importance of these to Australia.

Mr Bradbury discussed the ways that the students could dispose of the old flag. These include burying the flag, burning the flag and finally cutting the flag into small pieces and then placing the small pieces into the bin.

Check In Reading

Check-In Reading

Check-In Reading operates every morning (except Tuesdays) in the library. All students, parents and caregivers are welcome to attend between 8:30 and 8:55 to read.

Students read to a student tutor and can take the same book home to read.

There are also DS consoles for students to use with the Brain Training program and students can access the computers to practise their Literacy skills.

Year 6 Motorbike Raffle

Year 6 are holding a raffle. The major prize is a motorbike. Tickets are on sale from Monday 23rd May until 29th June 2011. Tickets cost $2 or 3 for $5.00.

Motorbike is on display in the library from Monday 23rd May until Friday 27th May 2011.

Tickets are for sale outside the library at recess and lunchtimes. Tickets can be purchased from the school office outside these times.

The raffle will be drawn on Thursday 30th June 2011, during the morning assembly.

This motorbike is not made and illegal to be ridden on the road.

Isabelle Close National Gymnast

Isabelle Close travelled to the AIS in Canberra on Tuesday 30th November to compete in the National Clubs Championship.

Isabelle was competing against 190 Level 4 gymnasts aging from 10 through to 16. Isabelle was one of the youngest

gymnasts.

She had to compete on four apparatus, which were Balance Beam, Uneven Bars, Floor and Vault.

Isabelle scored 12.85 on Vault placing 156 out of 190

She scored 12.85 on Floor placing her 155th, 12.10 on Uneven Bars placing 122nd and finally 13.55 on Balance Beam placing 80th.

Isabelle came 125th overall with a score of 51.35.

Operation Art 2010

Oxley Park Operation Art Success 2010

Carly and Harrison from Oxley Park Public School had success in Operation Art for 2010. Carly's artwork was chosen from all students within the Infants at Oxley Park Public School.

Operation Art had over 700 artworks submitted and the Top 50 Artwork will travel NSW Regional Galleries. Carly's artwork, after travelling to regional areas will be displayed in Westmead Children's Hospital.

Harrison also had success with Operation Art. His artwork was chosen to be on the front of Operation Art CD on teaching the artwork to students.

Congratulations to both Carly and Harrison.

Pixi Foto will be coming to Oxley Park Public School on Wednesday 8th September. They will take photos of all students, individually and as a class. Parents are able to order the package that best suits. These range from $24 for group only through to the Deluxe Package at $44.00.

Sporting Groups will be taken on Firday 10th September 2010.

All students are asked to come to school in full school uniform on both Wednesday 8th September and Friday 10th September.

Principal For A Day.

On Monday 2nd August Maralyn Parker, a writer from the Daily Telegraph became a Principal For A Day at Oxley Park Public School. She wrote an article for the Daily Telegraph, that was published on Wednesday 4th August edition.

Maralyn's editor had reduced the article length, making it fit within the space available. As it was cut and reduced due to election coverage. Maralyn has placed the full uncut article on her blog, including one photograph.

Paint the Town REaD

Oxley Park Public School was one of the schools that launched 'Paint the Town REaD'. Paint the Town REaD was a joint project between a number of organisations with in local area. Some of these include:

Mission Australia, Penrith City Council, Oxley Park Public School, Blacktown City Council, Penrith City Council Library and local artists, Authors and Illustrators.

The purpose of 'Paint the Town REaD' is to promote reading within the home. Is is aimed at preschool children but with a link to the benefits of reading to all children.

There has been a continual promotion of reading at Oxley Park, with a reaing library set up in Area 1 on Thursday mornings. During one of the promotions Judith Ridge can to Oxley Park to read to students. Since this event she has publised an article on reading with reference to Oxley Park. Holly, Jessica, Brayden, Helen, Sakilan and Fatimah have neen chosen to take part in a special project called 'Migrant Stories'. During this project they got to talk to a real author, Erin Vincent about interviewing people and then they interviewed people who had migrated to Australia. These interviews have been published in a book. This book is available for purchase from Penrith City Council for about $15.00. It can also be viewed at Oxley Park Public School, if interested please see Mrs Konarew.
